Can Vivian™ be used for file trading (MP3 or other files) like KaZaA and its clones?
    Vivian® Says...

No. The current implementation of the Viametrix Virtual Network™ (Vivian™) does not store any audio or video files on any end-user PC.

Can Vivian™ be used to provide Video-on-Demand (VOD) streaming?
    Vivian® Says...

The current implementation of the Viametrix Virtual Network™ (and Vivian™) supports streaming of both live and pre-recorded audio and video. Since we don’t store any audio or video files on any end user’s PC we do not currently support Video-on-Demand (VOD) streaming using our networking technology.

Video-on-Demand can be closely simulated utilizing multiple concurrent Vivian™ broadcast channels operating as a broadcast network however with staggered broadcast start times allowing viewers/listeners to select a broadcast based upon a posted schedule.  This provides a more effiicient use of broadcast bandwidth than traditional VOD solutions.

Vivian™ broadcasters needing to serve concurrent audiences will find that the the Vivian™ solutions far exceed the cost/benefit ratios of Video-on-Demand (VOD) solutions. This is due to the fact that Vivian provides the most efficient utilization of bandwidth available rather than VOD which can quickly bog down virtually any network with numerous concurrent users.

However, we do provide the on-line browser-based tool to create your own synchronized multimedia VOD presentation that mirrors what is delivered using our streaming delivery. These presentations can be delivered from your web site on a VOD basis or distributed via CD/DVD as needed.

What is the Viametrix Virtual Network™?
    Vivian® Says...

The Viametrix Virtual Network™ is a distributed overlay for IP networks which provides the most significant scalability. stability and consistent quality of service deliveries available. Unlike competitive networks, artificial intelligence is utilized by each network member to continually manage its own network connectivity and performance.  This provides the maximim amount of bandwidth that may be used for delivering media - not managing the network.  It is accessed for purposes of broadcasting and viewing streaming media utilizing the Vivian™ applications to broadcast and receive streaming audio and video.

Does Vivian™ track any of my web activities?
    Vivian® Says...

We believe your personal attributes and activities are your business, not ours. We utilize standard Internet/networking attributes, e.g., bandwdith availability, browser type, plug-in identification, IP address and ports used only for the purpose of managing and maintaining the Viametrix Virtual Network™ when you are connected and watching a broadcast channel.  Vivian™ does not include any "spyware" or "adware".  See the Viametrix Privacy Policy for details. Any Vivian™ broadcaster is free to collect the personal information desired of its audience membership and such information and collection is governed by each broadcaster's privacy policy - not Viametrix' policy.

What media encoders/servers/players are supported by Vivian?
    Vivian® Says...

Currently, the Microsoft Windows Media 9 Series is supported by Vivian.

Please check http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/default.aspx for additional information on the free encoder and player offered by Microsoft.  Using Vivian for broadcast streaming does NOT require the purchase of any additional server software.  Many currently streaming with existing industry-standard hardware will find that they can reduce or eliminate equipment already in service by using Vivian broadcast solutions.

What makes the Vivian™ streaming media solutions different and better than all other streaming solutions?
    Vivian® Says...

Better Network Technology The Viametrix Virtual Network™ is a software-based self-healing, self-sorting and self-organizing network array of personal computers that allows a media organization (audio/video broadcaster) to stream its audio or video to a very wide audience for a fraction of the costs incurred utilizing first generation solutions. It is not a traditional or simple peer-to-peer network because of the artificial intelligence-driven, massively distributed dynamic network array management deployed. Implementation of our application on the media broadcast server and for each client is very simple and straightforward. Our solution maximizes the amount of network bandwidth for distributing media - not managing the network.

Lower Cost Because Vivian™ is a software-only solution, there are no proprietary hardware requirements beyond those necessary to encode a live stream using any industry standard hardware. Viametrix’s solution drastically lowers the bandwidth costs of the streaming media broadcaster without limiting the number of prospective end users or negatively influencing the quality of service. Viametrix provides the lowest total cost of ownership available in the commercial marketplace.

Controllable Cost Because the pricing of Vivian™ is a simplified, easy-to-understand and control streaming organizations can set budgets and plan their future delivery costs with great ease and accuracy.

Scalability No other streaming solution can scale with the ease and efficiency of the Viametrix Virtual Network™. The unique distributed management inherent in our technology places virtually no management load on the originating broadcast server or any other member of the network. This is the fundamental difference between our patent-pending technical sophistication and that of simple peer-to-peer companies seeking to utilize a first generation software solution.

What network bandwidth capacities are supported by the Viametrix Virtual Network?
    Vivian® Says...

There are no bandwidth limitations imposed by the Viametrix Virtual Network technology. The streaming speed/bandwidth requirement is limited based upon the Vivian license configuration purchased by the broadcaster. The maximum streaming bandwidth capability is the lesser of:

    • your viewers/listeners' upload/upstream bandwidth (~100K for most current home cable and home DSL users) or
    • the originating bandwidth (at your broadcast server) HDTV quality is possible on most corporate networks.

The practical minimum bandwidth requirements to ensure a reasonable end-user experience are:

    • 20Kbps to an end user for audio streams
    • 100Kbps to an end user for video streams

What does it really cost to use Vivian™ to broadcast/deliver streaming media?
    Vivian® Says...

Viametrix offers multiple audio and video streaming products and hosting services.  This enables us to best meet our customers’ needs. The variables that need to be considered in determining the cost of use for our streaming products/services include:

    • the maximum bandwidth requirements of the terminal stream to end users
    • the total number of concurrent end users desired by the broadcaster per station
    • the minimum PC hardware requirements to install and run the Microsoft Media Encoder
    • the minimum PC hardware requirements to install and run the Vivian™ Broadcast Broadcast server and number of station licenses of your choice (only applicable if licensee/contractee is hosting vs. Viametrix)
    • license fee payable to Viametrix, Inc. to broadcast using Vivian™
    • the cost of the broadcaster's bandwidth, i.e., bandwidth of stream desired to be delivered to each end user (terminal stream)
    • any royalties or other payments due to the streamed content owner/licensor (if any)
    • any specialized add-on features needed by the client (you will be pleased with the standard features that are a part of every Vivian Broadcast license)
    • content production costs

Vivian™ provides the absolute lowest total commercial cost of media delivery options available while providing a high level of quality of service (QOS) experience for your audience.

How can I tell how fast my Internet connection is?
    Vivian® Says...

There are several well-publicized web sites offering assistance in determining the quality of your Internet service and getting the best performance from your PC. Although we do not endorse any changes to your computer configuration you may wish to check out one or more of the following:

You will need to check not only your download bandwidth, but also your upload bandwidth.  You may find out that your ISP is really not delivering the bandwidth speed that you expected.  If you determine that you need a replacement ISP, you can also find other ISP customer experiences at these sites that can assist you in determining which ISPs to consider.

Is any "spyware" or "adware" included with the installation of Vivian™?
    Vivian® Says...

Absolutely not.  The client software installed (Vivian™) to access the Viametrix Virtual Network™ is provided solely by Viametrix, Inc.  See the Viametrix Privacy Policy.

Can the Viametrix Virtual Network™ be used for distributed/grid computing?
    Vivian® Says...

The Viametrix Virtual Network™ is technically capable of supporting distributed/grid computing (e.g., utilization of networked computers to execute processes); however, that capability is not implemented at this time.

How much of my CPU will Vivian™ use while I'm listening to/watching a broadcast?
    Vivian® Says...

Depending on your CPU speed, Vivian™ will use anywhere from 0% of your CPU up to about 2% - only while you are listening to/watching a broadcast.  If you are not watching or listening to a broadcast, Vivian™ is not running and does not use any of your system resources.

Does the Viametrix Virtual Network™ or Vivian™ support collaborative computing?
    Vivian® Says...

The Viametrix Virtual Network™ could be used to support collaborative computing at this time, but this is not incorporated in the Vivian™ implementation for mulitmedia presentation broadcasts.

My Internet connection is too slow. What should I do?
    Vivian® Says...

You will be able to receive broadcasts at bandwidth speeds equal to or less than the lesser of your available inbound OR outbound Internet connection.  There are a number of factors which will impact your actual Internet connection speed.  If other Internet activity is occuring at the same time you are participating in a Vivian™ broadcast, e.g., file transfers on your Internet connection, your actual available bandwidth will be shared.  This means that you may not have enough bandwidth to perform both operations at the same time.  You will need to choose one or the other.  The following are other possible causes:

    • Reboot your Cable/DSL modem and router. Some models build up errors and periodically need to be cleared out.
    • After rebooting your Cable/DSL modem and router, please recheck your speed (particularly your UPLOAD speed) using the speed test site of your choice. There are several well-publicized web sites offering assistance in determining the quality of your Internet service and getting the best performance from your PC. Although we don't endorse any changes to your computer configuration (neither do we suggest that that make any changes to your PC's configuration) you may wish to check out one or more of the following:
    • If you are unable to receive the upload/download speed that you have been promised by your ISP, please contact your ISP's Technical Support.
    • Consider upgrading your Internet service or changing ISPs.

What is required to encode media files to broadcast using a Vivian Broadcast Server?
    Vivian® Says...

Currently, the only encoder supported by Vivian is the free Microsoft Media Series 9 encoder.

    Hardware Required for Encoding:

The configuration that you need for encoding will be dependent upon how much you need to encode and at what level(s) of quality.  Please check the Microsoft web site to determine the system requirements to meet your needs at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/encoder/sysreq.aspx

    Software Required for Encoding:

The free Microsoft Media Series 9 encoder can be downloaded from: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/encoder/default.aspx

Please note, all that encoding requirements are entirely separate from those required by Vivian. The hardware requirements for Vivian are much less than that required by the encoder software.

If you need to edit your audio or video prior to broadcasting consider the products offered by Pinnacle.  Their products are available for purchase at most computer retail stores.

Please be sure that you use consistent encoding parameters for each stream that you will broadcast using Vivian.

How is the Viametrix Virtual Network™ traffic managed with Vivian™?
    Vivian® Says...

    The Viametrix Virtual Network™

    • Access Viametrix Knowledge Base

What level of quality of service (QOS) can I expect with Vivian™ broadcasting solutions?
    Vivian® Says...

We have worked very hard to provide a very high level of quality of service for Vivian users.  Ensuring a consistent level of service starts with Viametrix Virtual Network™ (VVN).  The patent-pending technology employed in the management of the network ensures that it is the most scalable, most robust and most bandwidth efficient available.  The Vivian™ client application is continuously monitoring its own quality of service which ensures virtually no dropped frames and a very consistent user experience.

What are the system requirements for me to host a Vivian™ Broadcast Station running on a Vivian™ broadcast server?
    Vivian® Says...

    Hardware:

If you are broadcasting live content, you may want to use the PC running the Windows Media encoder to run your Vivian™ Broadcast Server.  Alternatively, you may choose to utilize a separate PC.  Please note: the hardware requirements for the encoding process are much higher than those required by Vivian.

If you choose to run the Vivian™ Broadcast Server on a standalone computer, you will need a PC running Microsoft Windows 2000 or XP (Pro preferred over Home).

CPU and RAM utilization requirements for the Vivian™ Broadcast Server are very low.  This enables the ability to broadcast many stations (could be the same or different concurrent broadcasts) from a single computer.  Depending on your requirements, you may choose to use an existing PC used for other tasks, e.g., your web server for your Vivian™ Broadcast Server PC.

    Software:

You will need a Vivian™ Broadcast Station license for each concurrent broadcast stream/station  you choose to distribute, subject to the license configuration you purchase.

    Bandwidth:

You will need outgoing bandwidth equal to the bandwidth speed you need to deliver to your audience members for each Vivian™ Broadcast Station license that can be in use at a time.  As an example, if you choose to deliver a 100Kbps video stream to your audience, you will need a broadband connection with 100Kbps dedicated outbound bandwidth during your broadcast.  If you will also be distributing text/graphics content to accompany your media stream, you will need to be sure to have additional bandwidth to support that additional content from the web server hosting that content.

    Vivian Broadcast Audience Experience
    Vivian® Says...

Vivian broadcasts are accessible to prospective broadband audience members around the world who have the free Windows Media Series 9 Player (over 50m copies have been downloaded so far) and the bandwidth required for your broadcast. Although Vivian broadcast solutions are targeted at broadband users (over 40m Internet users now have broadband access in the United States) the ActiveX control that each audience member needs is well under 200K in size. As enhancements are made available by Viametrix, the ActiveX control is automatically updated when audience members access any Vivian broadcast - ensuring that your audience members have access to new features and functionality as soon as they are available.

Unlike file sharing networks, no media files are stored on Vivian users' PCs and no PC resources (e.g., CPU, RAM, bandwidth) are utilized or required unless the user is actually viewing or listening to a Vivian broadcast. CPU and RAM requirements for Vivian are virtually non-existent. Vivian broadcasts are targeted to support broadband audiences as opposed to dial-up.

Audience member privacy is important to Viametrix. We don't collect any personally identifiable data from audience members. Please see our Privacy Policy.

Delivering a high quality experience to audience members is of significant importance. Vivian constantly monitors the bandwidth availability and adjusts the network automatically for each audience member to ensure the highest quality experience. Our technology also ensures the fastest available media delivery startup.

For audience members with questions or Vivian technical support needs, Viametrix provides 24*7 access to Frequently Asked Questions and our Support Knowledgebase.  Support for audience members is also available via email.

    Audience Measurement
    Vivian® Says...

Without compromising any audience member's privacy, Vivian™ broadcasters can monitor (real-time) their audience member connections.

Additionally, all Vivian™ broadcast access statistics are available to the respective broadcaster 24*7 in the Broadcast Management Center.

    Vivian™ Broadcast Management Center
    Vivian® Says...

In keeping with Viametrix' philosophy of giving Vivian™ broadcasters as much control as possible over their content and broadcast at the lowest cost, a browser-based online broadcast management center is an integral part of broadcasting with Vivian™.

This facility provides Vivian™ broadcasters with the ability to manage all aspects of their Viametrix account, all of their broadcast stations and get technical/customer support from any PC with access to the Internet 24*7.

Vivian Streaming Media Broadcast System Requirements
    Vivian® Says...

In order to broadcast with Vivian, you will need a PC with available resources to act as a streaming media server. If you are encoding and broadcasting live you may use the PC that is performing the encoding task to also act as your streaming media server.

A PC running Windows 2000 (server version NOT required), Windows XP Pro or Windows XP Home is required to broadcast using Vivian.

If you choose to broadcast multimedia presentations rather than just streaming media you will need to place your text and graphics (anything that can be delivered in a browser using standard HTML) on a web server for distribution to your audience.

    Digital Rights Management (DRM)
    Vivian® Says...

Streaming media, by its very nature, does not store any media files on any audience-member's PC. If audio and video files are not stored, they cannot be re-broadcast by audience members.

As a standard feature for all Vivian™ broadcast stations, the broadcaster can establish a password which must be provided by prospective audience members prior to accessing the station.

Each Vivian™ broadcaster can limit access to the broadcast by providing the password only to those who have paid for access using the broadcaster's own PayPal or other merchant account of the broadcaster's choosing. This may be changed 24*7 as often as the broadcaster chooses via the Vivian™ Broadcast Management Center.

Viametrix may provide a more robust DRM solution or support third party DRM solutions in the future.

    Dynamic Content Delivery Network
    Vivian® Says...

The patent-pending Viametrix Virtual Network™ creation and management technologies are the foundation components which enable the most efficient network node management and bandwidth use. By using artificial intelligence in each network node, a dynamic content delivery network is created and maintained automatically for each Vivian™ broadcast channel. This also ensures that the maximum amount of network bandwidth is available for media delivery (not network management), enabling the network to scale reliably on demand.

The Vivian™ client application continually monitors the available bandwidth, media buffer and media delivery quality. If a deficiency is identified, the network node automatically repositions itself to ensure continuity of the media delivery. There is no need for the broadcaster to evaluate Internet performance - the network manages itself and provides real-time audience connectivity statistics. Several levels of automatic network and media stream recovery are employed to maximize the quality of each audience member's experience.

No special hardware is required to enable subnet multicasting for Vivian™ broadcasters. Multicasting - using UDP is built in to every Vivian™ broadcast. This means that if one or more nodes on a network are in a specific Vivian™ audience, only one stream is broadcast over that subnet - ensuring the maximum network bandwidth utilization efficiency.

Due to our technology implementation each media stream starts very fast with the absolute minimum "buffering time".

Seeing is believing. Be sure to check out real-time, real media streams being delivered right now by other Vivian™ broadcasters via the Vivian™ Channel Guide.

    Dynamic DNS Service
    Vivian® Says...

Every computer connected to the Internet has a unique identifier called an IP address. Many times the IP address is consistently assigned (static) to a computer. On other networks, a random IP address is assigned each time a computer connects to the network. This is referred to as a dynamic IP address. If a computer address is dynamically assigned, the IP can change frequently. Anyone trying to access that computer from the Internet would be unable to do so consistently without dynamic DNS support.

Because there are many more Internet users than there are publicly accessible IP addresses, many broadband service providers only include dynamically-assigned (only while a user is actively connected to the Internet) IP addresses in their basic service offerings. They may charge extra to permanently allocate one or more specific public IP addresses to their subscribers.

Viametrix provides dynamic DNS support for Vivian broadcasters as a standard feature. This also means that Vivian broadcasters are NOT required to maintain a web site or own a domain name to broadcast audio and video over the Internet.

Fast and Easy Implementation for Broadcasters and Audience Members
    Vivian® Says...

Implementation time of Vivian™ broadcast solutions is measured in minutes, particularly for those already streaming with Windows Media Series 9.

We want everyone to be able to have their own Internet broadcast station - or network of stations. That means the whole experience has to be quick, easy and very cost-effective. Everything we do is in furtherance of these simple goals and objectives.

    High Quality of Service (QOS)
    Vivian® Says...

The patent-pending Viametrix Virtual Network™ creation and management technologies are the foundation components that enable the most efficient network node management and bandwidth use. By using artificial intelligence in each network node, a dynamic content delivery network is created and maintained automatically for each Vivian™ Broadcast Station. This also ensures that the maximum amount of network bandwidth is available for media delivery (not network management), enabling the network to scale reliably on demand.

The Vivian™ client application continually monitors the available bandwidth, media buffer and upstream and downstream media delivery quality. If a deficiency is identified, the network node automatically responsitions itself to ensure continuity of the media delivery. There is no need for the broadcaster to evaluate Internet performance - the network manages itself and provides real-time audience connectivity statistics. Several levels of automatic network and media stream recovery are employed to maximize the quality of each audience member's experience, even if its own Internet connection is sub-par or erratic.

Due to our technology implementation each media stream starts very fast with the absolute minimum "buffering time".

Seeing is believing. Compare our streams delivered at 100Kbps and others running up to two or three times that amount of bandwidth.

If you are already streaming media you can use Vivian to broadcast your own stream in minutes.P>

To ensure that all Vivian broadcasters always have the latest features available, no-charge updates are available throughout the paid license/contract term.

    Internet TV and Internet Radio
    Vivian® Says...

Prior to the advent of cable and satellite television, viewers were limited primarily to local network stations. These new technologies enabled subscribers to choose between hundreds of sources of content. However, even with all these choices, only content that was expected to be of interest to hundreds of thousands of viewers could be considered by broadcasters due to the development and delivery costs. Broadcasting was an option still only available to large commercial operations or well-funded private organizations.

The original promise of streaming media over the Internet made significant inroads into expanding the number of entities that could reasonably afford the delivery costs offered by earlier generation streaming delivery solutions. Prior Internet streaming delivery solutions (hardware and software-based) that could scale on demand have proven to still be out of the financial reach of many content owners who desire to broadcast. Viametrix' technology will enable anyone with a broadband Internet connection to broadcast audio or video over the Internet. With a Vivian™ Broadcast Station, you can create your own Internet TV or radio station and serve your own global niche audience - something traditional television simply cannot accomplish - whether you have your own web site or not.

Another situation that should not be overlooked is the fact that many traditional media users are not able to access that traditional media during the workday because a television/radio is not available in their workplace. Delivery of traditional media via the Internet would address the needs of many of these audience members.

Distributing media over the Internet allows broadcasters to serve the needs of highly targetable, smaller, geographically disparate audiences that could never be addressed economically through traditional broadcast means. Since this content is not available through traditional means, many audience members are willing to pay for content subscriptions. Using Vivian broadcasting solutions keeps the delivery cost per concurrent user very low, further enabling the profitability of broadcasts. No matter how low bandwidth charges go, Vivian broadcasters will have the advantage of Viametrix' patent-pending bandwidth-saving technology to make sure their delivery costs are the lowest available.

    Streaming Media Editing
    Vivian® Says...

Editing your audio or video before encoding and streaming is optional. There are quite a few editing applications available for download/purchase depending on the broadcaster's needs. One of the more popular consumer products for editing and encoding is Pinnacle Studio.

    Streaming Media Encoding
    Vivian® Says...

Before audio or video can be broadcast, it must be encoded. Currently, Vivian™ broadcast offerings support the free encoder available for download from the Microsoft web site here.

Once audio or video has been encoded it may be stored and broadcast one or more times. You may also choose to encode and broadcast live and save the encoding for later re-broadcast.

Please be sure to pay special attention to the hardware requirements from the Microsoft web site here for Windows Media Series 9 encoder. Encoding is a CPU, RAM and disk-access intensive process. Skimping on the encoding process will directly (negatively) impact the quality of your broadcast.

    Multimedia Player Interface
    Vivian® Says...

There are two primary multimedia player interfaces provided with Vivian™ broadcast products. All products come standard with the Vivian™ Station Guide. Multimedia Presentations with Playmagix
    Vivian® Says...

Viametrix' broadcast solutions controlled by Playmagix allow broadcasters to deliver interactive text, graphics, etc. files along with their streaming media to a global audience. This functionality is most popular with enterprise and distance learning streaming requirements. However, there are many more uses of multimedia presentations that are not being fully exploited due to the cost and implementation difficulty of non-Vivian solutions.

Rather than just delivering audio / video and streaming ads, Vivian broadcasters can easily implement additional information/audience interactivity using the integrated, browser-based Playmagix, e.g.:

    • For each audio/video stream as it is played
      • Support interactive shopping, e.g., coordinated E-Commerce links to purchase the song/CD/video subject
      • Coordinate the presentation of anything that can be delivered in a browser using standard HTML including:
        • HTML links to obtain interactive feedback from individual audience members
        • Text/graphic ads accompanying streaming media
        • Text-based closed captioning
        • Spreadsheet presentations
        • Adobe PDF files
    • Play individual audio/video streams
      • In a specific order
      • For a specified amount of time
      • In order or randomly selected from broadcaster-specified groups of streams
    • Change multimedia content to be delivered without re-encoding audio/video
    • Display a schedule of content that will be broadcast at specified times

Using the ability to deliver specific web pages to your audience at specific times, you can easily create the ability to ensure that your audience members are not only watching your broadcast as it happens by having them personally respond to web pages delivered with the media stream.  This is an incredibly easy and efficient way to gain implement audience member accountability - something that other multicast systems simply cannot do.

    Pay-Per-View
    Vivian® Says...

As a standard feature for all Vivian™ broadcast stations, the broadcaster can establish a password which much be provided by prospective audience members.

    Streaming Media Sources
    Vivian® Says...

    Live Audio/Video

Video cameras and microphones and related media production equipment is required to create any live streaming media.

    Pre-Recorded/Encoded Audio/Video

Audio/video which has been previously stored in a file can be encoded for broadcasting also. The ultimate broadcast quality is highly dependent upon the best possible original media capture and encoding process.

While attempting to listen to or view a broadcast, I got the following error message: "Your current firewall settings are preventing you from accessing this station. There are currently no proxies available for this station."
    Vivian® Says...

Vivian™ can automatically traverse many existing router and software-based firewalls. If the router-firewall cannot be automatically traversed, Vivian™ uses any available proxies. In this case, your firewall could not be automatically traversed and no proxies were available for the selected channel at the particular point in time that you tried to connect.

You can prevent getting this message in the future by opening/forwarding port 80 (which was also included in the error message) in your firewall/router.  If you are using a software-based firewall, simply "allow" the Vivian.exe program to run.

Every router has its own requirements for configuration which can be found in your owners' manual/guide. If you are unable to locate your original documents please check your router manufacturer's web site for specific instructions related to Port Forwarding.

It is unlikely, but possible to be listening to a broadcast and later receive this message if you are behind a firewall and the proxy you were previously receiving your channel from leaves the broadcast.

Popular home/small office router-firewall manufacturer web sites include:

Another possibility of the source of accessing port 80 is that your ISP has blocked this port (even if you have a T1 or higher access speed). The reasons for this include that the ISP sees this as a way to reduce the overall bandwidth that you will use (thus lowering their costs) and lower support costs due to the this practice also reducing the likelihood of DDOS/spam attacks originating FROM your computer if it is infected with a virus or other malicious program. If your ports are blocked by your ISP, they may or may not have told you that they have imposed these limits on your service.  Please contact your ISP.

Why are Vivian broadcasting solutions so much more cost effective and efficient than Video-on-Demand (VOD), particularly for delivering high quality audio and video to audiences of 50 or more concurrent members?
    Vivian® Says...

Even the most robust networks strain under the delivery requirements of normal non-audio/video network traffic when combined with heavy use of quality Video on Demand (VOD) (100Kbps and above) streams. Under the VOD distribution model, the same amount of bandwidth is required to deliver the media for each person/PC requesting a file/stream on the network. Multicasting is of no help. Even local/edge caching is of limited benefit because the full amount of bandwidth is still required to transfer the file from one PC to its "network/grid neighbor".

Vivian broadcast solutions provide the most efficient multimedia delivery model available for communicating the same information to a large audience at one time or on a scheduled basis. This is due to the software-based multicasting capability built in to every Vivian solution.

The following table shows an estimate of the maximum number of concurrent users (based on theoretical bandwidth limits) of several network types for the delivery of VOD at varying encoding rates - assuming the entire network was available only for VOD use - not a very likely situation.  As a result, actual available network bandwidth will be even less than that shown below.

Using the Vivian broadcast solution (based on licensed configuration), the same audio/video stream delivered by a VOD or edge caching solution above could be broadcast 24 hours per day to thousands of audience members and require only a single copy/use of the encoded bandwidth over the LAN/WAN at any time during the 24 hour broadcast time period. This is a phenomenal savings in bandwidth and delivery costs over any VOD solution.

Microsoft Windows XP SP2 implements a new software firewall. How do I open the appropriate port to watch Vivian broadcasts?
    Vivian® Says...

Normally, Vivian™ requires port 80 to be open.  Please open this port (or the port number provided in a Vivian™ error message if different from port 80) in your firewall.  The following is provided by Microsoft:

If you cannot identify the ports that are used by the program, you can open a port manually. To identify the specific port number to open, contact the product vendor or see the product user documentation. After you identify the port number that you want to open, follow these steps:

    1. Click Start, click Run, type wscui.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK.
    2. Click Windows Firewall.
    3. On the Exceptions tab, click Add Port.
    4. In the Add a Port dialog box, type the number of the port that you want to open in the Port number box, and then click either TCP or UDP.
    5. Type a name for the port, and then click OK. For example, type GamePort.
    6. To view or set the scope for the port exception, click Change Scope, and then click OK.
    7. On the Exceptions tab, notice that the new service is listed. To enable the port, click to select the check box next to the service, and then click OK

    Broadcast
Vivian® Says... Broadcasting [as differentiated from video-on-demand (VOD)] is the delivery of the same content at the same time to many people.  This is the classic manner in which television, radio and scheduled satellite content is delivered and is the most efficient delivery method.
